Procedure

Residencies in Germany are like jobs. Once you have your certificates. You can apply through email or send application by post to HR department (Personal Abteilung) of Hospitals which have vacancies. If they like your CV and experience they will call you for Interview which is obviously conducted in German language. Once you are selected by the Hospital, you will receive an appoinment letter , with that you can apply for Berufserlaubnis ( Temporary German Medical License which is valid only to the particular State). This can take anywhere between 2 weeks to 5 months depending upon the state in which you apply. After receiving the license one can officially start working as a PG trainee and start receiving monthly salary of around 4000 Euros gross, which after taxes shrink to around 2300-2400 Euros /Month.
Berufserlaubnis gives you the time (6 months to 2 years depending upon State) to start working for the time being and  get a Approbation (Permanent License) in the stipulated time.

Primary Medical training in  Russia and Eastern Europe is sometimes considered equivalent to that in Germany when compared number of hours of teaching in each subject and duration of the course therefore these doctors many times donot need to apply for Berufserlaubnis, they can directly get a Permanent license ( Approbation -valid all over Germany) without any exam.

For countries from Indian subcontinent ,Africa and Gulf, Doctors need to take a exam (Knowledge Test/ Gleichfertigkeit Prufung) inorder to get a Permanent Medical License in Germany.

  1. Congratulations on making it in Germany.
Which subject did you get residency in?
I've heard that Germany has become competitive. Should that be a deterrent factor?
What advice would you give to a pg aspirant who has just started learning German?

  2. Hi, it is true that at present Germany has become quite competitive but not impossible for people willing to work hard and take the risk. Yes, in current situation starting preparation for germany is a Risk. because by the time one finishes language say..in one year time, it would be more competitive. but then getting PG anywhere is competitive be it India or USA.

  5. Hi Dr.Deepak I have a question for you and it would be very helpful if you can give me some answers! I would like to know regarding diplomas from third word countires, like myself though I am already an ENT consultant surgeon and my wife is a head of department in radiology and until now we have both worked in different hospitals for almost 30 years including France and curretly in the middle east like Duabi and Saudi arabia and we took many leading and scientific responsabilities. we have a decent knowledge of german but I was wondering if we would like to work in germany in our respective fields do we have to go all over the weiterbildung once again or there is a possiblity to work as a specialist (by the way we just turned both 53 y.o )
    Best regards

    1. Dear Sir, If your PG degree is recognised by France and you have a license to practice medicine in France, that automatically qualifies you to work in any country in European Union, provided you show the required language proficiency, its B2 German level for Germany. Having said that, as per my observation, there is no scarcity of highly qualified and experienced specialists here. They need assistent doctors to keep day to day system running. I would suggest, you should apply to the desired published vacancies (you can find them on google) with your CV and a well written email showing your intent (everything in german). Only by actually applying you will find out the scope as it is unusual for specialist doctors to move to Germany as the pay is not as high as the places you have already worked at, like Dubai or Saudi. Please share with me the response you recieve to your applications.

      All the best !!!

  11. Hi sir..
Actually I have done mbbs from china but I did my intrnshp in india.as post suggest german universities will be validating our degree from our respective universities so will they be validating my degree from india and China both? Do I need any noc regarding tht??

  12. Hello ,
you are right. German medical council will verify your degree from China and MCI registration from India. But you donot need any NOC regarding that. they do things on their own. New information is some states in germany have stopped verifying documents from respective universerties , they just verify it from the German embassy and therefore reducing the time required for the process.
